Motivational levels are always changing. When life gets hard, your character is defined and built. It is important to have some go to actionable tasks that you can perform to help you stay motivated along the journey. Maybe you’re feeling a little stuck working on a creative project, like writing an article or painting a piece of art. Don’t dwell on what went wrong. Instead, focus on what to do next. Spend your energy moving forward together towards an answer. Perhaps you started a new business, took on a major project at work, or began a new health or fitness regimen. Your initial excitement has worn off, and you’re now feeling stuck, confused, or overwhelmed by how to keep progressing forward. If things in your life haven’t gone the way you hoped, dwelling on this will only bring you unhappiness, and hold you back from uncovering your true potential. The only thing a person can ever really do is keep moving forward. Take that big leap forward without hesitation, without once looking back. Simply forget the past and forge toward the future. Here are our tips for how to let go of the past and keep moving forward.
Take time for self-care.
None of us have unlimited energy. Eventually, we get tired and need to rest. Take time to give yourself some self-care. That means doing things that make you feel good or help you to feel relaxed. There are a number of different things you can consider trying. I’ll offer a few examples to get you started.
Making yourself feel good:
• Enjoy your favorite meal.
• Watch your favorite TV show.
• Talk to someone you’re close with.
• Do an activity that’s fun.
• Spend time one of your passions.
Making yourself relaxed:
• Take a warm bath.
• Drink some tea.
• Walk in nature.
• Meditate.
• Listen to some relaxing music.
You know yourself well enough to decide what things would make you feel good and relax you. Make it a habit to regularly practice self-care.
Make the task more enjoyable.
Raking the leaves might sound like a dreadful way to spend the afternoon, but what if you listened to your favorite album on your iPod while you raked? You could invite a few friends over for a barbeque and ask them to bring a rake. * Ask yourself, "How can I make this task as enjoyable as possible?" and then listen to the answers you receive.
Reward Yourself
Take the time to recognize your progress and give yourself a reward for your hard work and effort. By recognizing your progress, you are making small notes of mini goals and accomplishments along the way. This makes the work more rewarding, making you naturally feel better about the activity. Try rewarding yourself with something that is enjoyable, it doesn’t need to be special but you should enjoy it so it is consistently rewarding.
Remember, it’s not a race.
If you do just one thing a day, you will reach your goal. Sometimes even doing that one thing can seem overwhelming, and if so, just get started and you can always give yourself the weekend off. Pretty soon, you will find that doing this work to get to the next level of your life is actually rewarding, and you will start to feel better.
Even making a little progress can go a long way.
The key is to stick with what you’ve started. It’s kind of like writing a book. In the beginning, you have an idea, or maybe several, but by writing one page at a time, you will complete the book and feel pretty great about yourself. Progress is a great healer.
Eliminate Distractions
Getting rid of all distractions is key to staying motivated. Little distractions can cause big delays in your progress if you let them. By choosing a setting that is distraction free you are setting yourself up for success. Today, there are so many distractions between email, social media, smartphones, tablets, television, other people and more. Learning to avoid the distractions is key to truly staying on task, driven and motivated to succeed. In pshycologytoday.com an article titled 5 Foolproof Ways to Stay Motivated, stated that “nothing is more demotivating than a cluttered mind.”
Ask For Help
Asking for help in any situation is smart because there is always something you can learn from someone else. Gain knowledge from your peers or those who are more experienced and you will expand your mindset. Learning from others gives you the necessary information to improve. The smartest entrepreneurs ask for help, including Richard Branson who once said, “When you need to make hard decisions, being able to discuss your ideas with entrepreneurs and business leaders who have solved similar problems can make all the difference.” It is important to ignore your ego and ask for advice more often than not.
Include another person.
Going to the gym each day can be challenging. But if you know your workout partner is waiting for you, it's more difficult to stay home. The presence of others can increase your level of commitment. Reach out to a friend. Without motivation, willpower is the only solution. Willpower is much more difficult to sustain than motivation. Learning to control your motivation is part of learning to control yourself. There's little that can't be accomplished once you learn how manipulate your level of motivation. Even the most challenging tasks become manageable.
